In 1999, Dr. Henry Shimizu created a series of oil paintings based on his life as a teenager in the New Denver Japanese Internment Camp, BC, from 1942 to 1946. The exhibit highlights the activities and daily life of the internees in the camp.

Victoria-based artist Lisa Hebden explores the transformation from childhood to adulthood, with a series of paintings of young girls. With her art, Hebden captures both the physical and psychological feeling of being small.

Two Fish, Out of Water

Paul Kohl, a professor in art at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, invites viewers to discover an estranged view of Japanese landscape. Kohl uses an unusual technique of scanning black and white negatives using Photoshop as a darkroom.

Inverting the Lens

This exhibit features photography by the Al Manaja'as, a Bedouin family of the Howeitat trib from Humayma, Jordan. In collaboration with UVic Graduate student, Robbyn Gordon Lanning, members of the al Manja'a family take images of their community, family and daily life.

This exhibit features the CJ Fox Collection of Wyndam Lewis' art and literary works. Cyril Fox, a former Canadian Press journalist, wanted to explore his extensive English Modernism collection.

Icons of a Border: A Photographic Search for Traces in Today's Berlin

This exhibit highlights the photography exploration of 36 students from the University of Paderborn, who document both the visible and invisible remnants of the Berlin Wall in modern-day Germany.

In Search of Lost Time: The Art of Cameron Ian MacLeaod, 1958 to 1983

Cameron Ian MacLeod was the student of such talented painters as Jack Shadbolt, Gordon A. Smith, and Takao Tanabe, until his life was cut short at the age of 25. The exhibit features work by the young artist, along with his three mentors' paintings.

An Environmental Concern for the Earth's Destruction

In Horst Loewel's exhibit, the artist demonstrates, through painting, the way humankind is contributing to the destruciton of Earth. Loewel hopes to inspire the next generation to preserve the Earth by representing the seriousness of the issue.

Woven in Time

This exhibtion contains photographs by Uvic student, Ashley Akins. The images document rural life in Peru's Patakancha Valley, where textile weaving is an integral, but endangered concept.

Lisa Murray's This Earth explores texture, movement, and colour through acrylic paint and collage techniques. The artist was inspired by the various qualities of light throughout the day.

Macbeth: A Civil War of the Mind

Wade Stout's paintings feature the artist's unique representation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. By combining classical drama, Tarot, mythology and modern symbolism, Stout creates layers of meanings.

Living with Land Mines

V. Tony Hauser exhibits 17 life-sized portraits of Cambodian children who have suffered the effects of land mines. This shocking display gives light to social justice.

Mosaic & Millennium in a Box

Put on by the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild, the display consists of two very distinct exhibitions. A Book Arts Mosaic features 25 pieces, of various medias, that focus on the cultural diversity of Canada. Millennium in a Box features 35 artists' interpretations of where the new millennium may lead.

The Mac: A Tribute

In Ruth MacLaurin's The Mac, the artist pays tribute to the educational contributions made to UVic by her late uncle, Dr. Donald L. MacLaurin. Using manipulated photographs, sound collages, videos and sculptural elements, Ruth honours her uncle's legacy.

Robert Kelly's Minutia installation consisting of eleven "conceptual books" arranged on lecturnes in a thirty-foot circle. The title of the exhibit refers to the minute details in time.

Sveva Caetani: Selected Drawings and Paintings of Recpitulation

A series of surrealistic watercolour paintings which began as a tribute to Sveva Caetani's father who passed away when she was only 17. For 25 years following her father's passing, Caetani lived in virtual isolation, caring for her invalid mother. At her mother's passing, Caetani obtained her teaching certificate at UVic and began her career as an inspiring art teacher.

Harold Pardey - Through the Left Eye

A series of linoprints and drawings created by Gwen Luptak. The linoprints explore various intimate responses to life within an emotional context. The drawings were composed during Luptak's residency in Greece, with the intent of "connecting universal symbols from the past to our present in ways that are relevant and and meaningful to contemporary life" (Luptak, 1995).

The artist sought to form a sense of familiarity with a classic park benches, and then deepened this by adding the sound of a doorbell -- a sound only found in the familiar and intimate location of one's home.
