Joe David (Nuu-Chah-Nulth) was born in 1946 in the Clayoquot village of Opitsat on Meares Island off the West coast of Vancouver Island and grew up in Seattle, Washington. He is a member of the Tla-o-qui-aht Band of the Nuu-chah-nulth people and is also formally adopted by the Haida people. His father gave him a strong grounding in his cultural heritage.
David is considered a leading Nuu-Chah-Nulth artists and is renowned for his carving, graphic art and teaching. He is a gifted singer and dancer who has performed and lectured internationally. His masks, totem poles, drums and silkscreen prints are found in museum and corporate collections around the world.
